A Day to Remember: Rajah at the Aapravasi Ghat Presentation at the Flacq Disabled Centre

On the 27th of May 2024, the Flacq Disabled Centre was graced with a captivating and educational presentation by Mrs. Soonanda Bhadye and Ms. Darshini Luttoo from the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund. Their visit, aimed at sharing the historical narrative of Rajah at the Aapravasi Ghat, was not only professionally executed but also deeply engaging for our students. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Bhadye and Ms. Luttoo for their dedication and passion in bringing this significant chapter of Mauritian history to life.

The Story of Rajah: A Journey of Indenture

The story of Rajah at the Aapravasi Ghat is a poignant reminder of the trials and triumphs of indentured labourers who arrived in Mauritius in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Rajah, like many others, embarked on a journey from India to Mauritius, passing through the Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the primary immigration depot for indentured labourers. These individuals, under fixed-term contracts, contributed immensely to the development of Mauritius’s sugar plantations and, subsequently, its economy.

The narrative shared by Mrs. Bhadye and Ms. Luttoo highlighted Rajah’s experiences, from the rigorous health inspections upon arrival to the challenging working conditions on the plantations. Despite the adversities, many labourers, including Rajah, managed to establish roots in Mauritius, contributing to its rich cultural tapestry.

An Engaging and Educational Experience

Our students were enthralled by the presentation, which seamlessly blended historical facts with engaging storytelling. The life of Rajah resonated with them, providing a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and resilience of the indentured labourers. The interactive nature of the session, including quizzes and discussions, further enhanced their learning experience.

A Generous Gift

At the conclusion of the presentation, the Flacq Disabled Centre was honored to receive a thoughtful kit from the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund. This kit included the “Rajah at the Aapravasi Ghat” book, quiz sheets, and coloring worksheets, providing our students with additional resources to explore this important historical period. These materials will undoubtedly foster further curiosity and understanding of Mauritius’s heritage among our students.

The Legacy of Indentured Labourers

The significance of the indentured labour system in shaping the history of Mauritius cannot be overstated. The arrival of nearly half a million labourers brought about a profound transformation in the island’s demographic and cultural landscape. Today, a significant portion of the Mauritian population is of Indian descent, and their influence is evident in the island’s cuisine, traditions, and social fabric.

The Aapravasi Ghat stands as a monument to this crucial period, reminding us of the resilience and contributions of those who came before us. It is through the efforts of organizations like the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund and dedicated individuals like Mrs. Bhadye and Ms. Luttoo that these stories continue to inspire and educate future generations.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We at the Flacq Disabled Centre extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Soonanda Bhadye, Ms. Darshini Luttoo and the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund for their enlightening presentation and generous gifts.
